The St Fort Herd of Rare Breed Lincoln Red Cattle
&
A brief historical summary of 100% Lincoln Reds.

In 1895 The Lincoln Red Association, ( the for-runner of the Lincoln Red Cattle Society) was formed. It was the aim of the association to "breed each succeeding generation, better cattle than before"
An early improvement was to poll the cattle which was done partly with the use of a red Aberdeen Angus bull. In 1977 the "Breed development Scheme"was introduced. This allowed continental blood to be introduced into the breed, under strict controls and inspections so that uniformity, colour, temperament and other established qualities were not lost to the breed.
This has resulted in the excellent commercial cattle that we see in the breed today.
However the RBST (Rare Breed Survival Trust) recognised that along with other native cattle breeds, the numbers of Lincoln Red Cattle free from continental blood was diminishing and therefore added these cattle to their Rare Breeds Register.
Hence all Lincoln Red Cattle with 100% Lincoln Red Blood and have the "P" letter preceeding their herd number qualify as Rare Breed Cattle.
The St Fort 100% Cattle
By the year 2000 our own pool of 100% females had dwindled to only four cows. We decided that for both our own blood lines and the integrity of the herd we should reverse this trend and revive the number of these cattle. This meant putting our 100% cows to 100% bulls either by breeding our own bulls or by AI.
Unfortunately, only two of these cows, R31 and P10 went on to produce heifer calves and so in 2004 when an opportunity arose at the Lincoln Red Autumn sale at Louth we purchased Brooks Thora 119th; whos grandsire happened to be St Fort Kondor. She fetched the highest price any Lincoln Red Female has ever reached.
The Foundation Herd
St Fort Northolm R31. P16775
One of the Northolm dynasty. Her great grand dam was Frisby Northolm, and her great grand sire was one of our famous bulls from the seventies St Fort Xmoor.
She shares the same blood lines as St Fort Northolm J60 (100%) who bred a number of outstanding stock bulls including St Fort Rambo, whose grandsons St Fort Dundee (in Ayrshire), St Fort Dickens (in Lincolnshire ), St Fort Essex ( in Lincolnshire), and St Fort Guv,nor and St Fort Jonathon (both at home as stock bulls).
R 31 was naturally polled, she was a good breeder producing eleven live calves one of which was St Fort Urchin who was sold to Northern Ireland. Allegedly "Urchin" was later taken over on an open boat, tied by his halter to the mast, to Ratlin Island off the coast of Antrim where he ran with all the cows on the island.
St Fort Hetty P10
St Fort Hetty descends from Anwick Hetty 101st and Cockerington Jonathon, the first Licoln Red bull purchased by St Fort.
Hetty,s are still prominent in our herd. Hetty P 15604 was a prize winner at the Royal Highland show in 1995.
At present she has three descendants in the Rare Breed Herd. Her two daughters are by Donnington Trooper and Whitehouse Donald. They have inherited their dams rich ruby coat.
Her bull calf, St Fort Eskimo is polled as are his four 100% daughters. Eskimo has also been used on some non 100% Lincoln Reds in our herd.
Brooks Thora 119th.
Brooks Thora is a handsome quality cow. When she was purchased she was already in calf and had a heifer calf at foot, both by Cowbridge Ambassadour (pedigree not 100%) . She went on to have a very good bull calf, St Fort Harry who is now one of our stock Bulls. He has his dams excellent conformation, deep girth and evenly and easily fleshed.
She has since produced two promising bull calves by Acthorpe Nelson (100%)
St Fort Joker, who is now being used as our Stock Bull on the 100% females, and St Fort Jumbo who was sold to Northeren Ireland.
Our aim is to produce a small herd of Rare Breed Lincoln Red Cattle that can compete in the commercial market and also enable us to sell a number of animals to specialist breeders. We also hope to be able to contribute to the survival of these wonderful cattle.
